Dear Kendo Friends,

Last year October, we held our first Copa del Caribe (Caribbean Cup) in Aruba. For the first time, Kendoka from Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Aruba as well as visitors from NY attended this tournament, which was won by Mr. Sawada of the Dominican Republic. Ebihara Sensei 7 Dan from Ken Zen NY supervised this succesful event. This time, we plan to organize this event once again but this time in Maracaibo, Venezuela, hoping to receive Kendoka from Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Aruba, Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, USA and others Nations. The dates will probably be October 12-15 (Thursday -Sunday). We cordially invite you and your dojo members to participate in this event.

The provisional program is as follows:

Thursday 12 Arrival of delegations. Welcome keiko in the evening

Friday 13 Seminar (morning and afternoon sessions). Instructor: Sensei Daniel Ebihara Kendo Kyoshi 7th Dan, Head-Instructor of Ken-Zen Dojo of New York, USA.

Saturday 14 Individual competition (morning) and Team competition (afternoon, the team competition is a club competition, so there can be more than one team for each country). Keiko. Sayonara Party

Sunday 15 Exams (morning). Farewell Keiko. Departure of delegations (afternoon).

The main objective of this event is to foster and expand Kendo activities in the South American, Central American and Caribbean zone. We invite therefore all kendoka from the Americas and other parts of the world to join in this tropical Caribbean Kendo event.

For more information, please contact:

VENEZUELAN KENDO FEDERATION Atten. Alejandro Guillen phone /fax: + 58-61-524234 e-mail: la_gocha@yahoo.com

We hope to see you in Maracaibo!

Not even the dark, bone-chilling wooden floor of the aging dojo on this cold winter morn could break my concentration. I arise from a deeply focused meditation of what may have been minutes or hours, purified and centered. “Simple indeed - this task of mine.” At the speed of light, my right leg surges forward and my drawn sword whistles upward, deftly cutting its mark. The observer senses that only a disciplined student of the sword could have harnessed the mind and body harmony necessary for that lightning kill. I again bow with the happiness of knowing I am in harmony once again.

Hi Yall! I guess you noticed from my greeting, that I'm a good ol' Southern girl (USA). I'm 15yrs. old and play the clarinet in the local High School Band. I am also President of the Future Homemakers of America, at my School. I was born and raised (or nearly) in Fayette, Alabama. I NEED SOME HELP!! I am collecting t-shirts from all across the country and around the world. My dad is a former Radio announcer; turned electronics tech. He tells me that most successful companies always have an extra promotional shirt or two that they would love to get rid of. Dad said, " If yall don't have an extra one we'll take the one you're wearing". All of this started as a project to help me with my computer skills and it's working. It's also helping me learn how other people live and talk in other parts of the world. The biggest thing I have learned is that there are some very nice people ALL over the world. I have received items from several places in the U.S., Australia, Cuba, Mexico, Netherlands, England, and etc. So, once again I need your help. Oh, by the way…I wear a size large. Thank you for taking time to do this for me. Amanda Harkey 2344 County Rd. 106 Fayette, Alabama, USA 35555 harkey@pepperlink.net

Having practised kendo in the UK 20 years ago I restarted here in New Zealand 2 years ago. I must confess that kendo seemed easier in my 20s rather than now in my 40s, but it shows that the kendo 'bug' is a difficult one to shake off...New Zealand is rather isolated from the rest of the kendo world and I do enjoy finding out about other organisations etc from the internet. If anyone can send us (or e-mail me) with any information regarding training etc, it all helps us keep up with the rest. Having said that kendo is very strong in New Zealand and visiting kendoka (mainly from Japan which is accessible to us) always feel that we are doing it 'OK"! I am a willing recipient for any spare tenugui that clubs or associations may have and we will reciprocate with a Nelson Kendo one when our new design comes out for year 2000. If you are visiting New Zealand, get in touch- our hospitality is world famous and don't forget your bogu!
